Sink your teeth into this Apple announcement.
The tech giant unveiled the iPhone 16 on Monday, introducing more advanced hardware capabilities, an even sleeker and more durable design, and integration with artificial intelligence powered by ChatGPT, which allows users to make even more nuanced commands.
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus start at $799 and $899, respectively. There’s also the iPhone 16 Pro, starting at $999, and the Pro Max, priced at $1,199.
The phones will be available in September. 20, with pre-orders starting Friday. Apple also unveiled software improvements in the form of iOS 18.
The iPhone 16, which comes in 6.1 inches or 6.7 for its Plus model, introduces a new camera-specific slider on the bottom half of the phone. This “camera control” feature automatically brings up the camera app and, with a tap, allows users to change a list of many high-end optical functions to enhance photos. The 6.3-inch Pro and 6.9-inch Pro Max models also have a Camera Control button.
The camera itself is 48 megapixels, four times the resolution of the iPhone 14. It also has an ultra-wide ratio and spatial photography features. New audio features can also help eliminate background noise.
Next month, iPhone 16 users will test Apple Intelligence, a generative AI powered by ChatGPT that has a number of writing and tone enhancements — Apple even says it can smooth out Slack messages for your boss — including the ability to create images and custom emojis from written requests.
What’s in store for the iPhone 16
- A new side camera hardware button
- 48 megapixel camera
- Enhanced personalized photo album collections
- Artificial “Apple Intelligence” powered by ChatGPT
- Improved Siri in conversation
- Writing tools that can work with apps like Slack to send more professionally polished messages
- The iPhone camera can now scan restaurants, books, flyers and merchandise and pull up relevant information
- New AI privacy features
- iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max have the thinnest brand
- It can create custom images and emojis from text requests
- The action button has more features
- Transcribed call option
Siri also has a much greater conversational ability to understand the context of spoken and written conversations. It can scan text from messages and pull up music albums and other related things that are searchable.
On the iPhone camera roll, the new software is also based on searchable features. Now users can instantly filter their images and videos by searching for people’s names and what they were doing to create collections of memories from specific dates.
Again, the new iPhone’s camera sees a huge improvement when paired with Apple Intelligence to essentially scan the world around you. If you show it the exterior of a restaurant, it can pull up hours, reviews and menus, and it can also scan flyers to enter dates into calendars.
Taking photos of products you’re interested in can also drive purchase opportunities, and the high-tech camera can even help distinguish between dog breeds. Apple also pointed out that the ChatGPT-equipped device can scan college lecture notes and help with study time.
Calls can also now be recorded, transcribed and summarized, according to the company. Notifications also have a priority order feature.
On the phone side, Apple Intelligence will also be available on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max in a free update next month. More features will be rolled out in the coming months as well.
The company also addressed the need for privacy with key upgrades and noted that it has built in a “private cloud account” option that doesn’t even store data with Apple, the brand noted.
The iPhone is powered by a specially designed and high-powered “A18” chip that promises better battery life.
Its action button has also been improved to quickly activate the phone’s other capabilities. This includes turning on the flashlight, language translation, music identification or other shortcuts.
