Attorneys for actor Kevin Spacey are asking a judge to void the sale of his Baltimore mansion, according to a report in the Baltimore Banner.
The House of Cards star’s legal team filed documents Friday calling the sale of his beachfront home a “sham” auction. They allege the sale went ahead with zero warning, a low price and that the buyer — a Bethesda real estate mogul named Sam Asgari — used scare tactics to scare Spacey away.
“Mr. “Asgar’s conduct to date makes it clear that he has no intention of complying with the rules applicable to buyers after a foreclosed sale,” Spacey’s attorney, Edward U. Lee III, wrote in a court filing obtained by The Post.
Lee claims Asgari served an eviction notice on the property, falsely declaring it “abandoned” to bully Spacey into vacating early.
Even after being informed the house was not abandoned, Lee says, Asgari continued his “harassing and threatening behavior.”
Spacey, who has called the stunning 9,000-square-foot mansion in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor home for more than seven years, fell behind on his mortgage.
Asgari, of Simo Homes LLC, placed the winning bid of $3.24 million at an auction in July — nearly $2 million less than Spacey paid for it.
Now, Spacey wants the Baltimore County District Court to block Asgar’s purchase and put the luxury home back on the market, claiming the sales process was flawed and unfair.
But Asgari told the newspaper, “The exemptions presented have no merit and are designed to buy time at our expense, to live in the property for free and to smear the buyer.” He insists Spacey’s claims are “worthless” and expects them to be thrown out.
Asgari did not respond to The Post’s request for comment. Spacey’s representatives also did not return a request seeking comment.
After a foreclosure auction, the courts must approve the sale before the highest bidder can officially sign the deed. This process often takes months, during which time the former homeowner may remain in the property.
But sometimes, a buyer will offer “cash for keys” – a reward for the owner to leave quickly. Asghar had offered Spacey $50,000 if he left by September. 15, according to emails in court filings. Spacey’s camp hit back, suggesting he could hold out until February if he didn’t interfere with the sale.
The battle for Spacey’s luxury home comes after a debt collection agency launched a foreclosure in April 2022. Spacey’s team tried twice to negotiate in mediation, but failed to prevent the auction. The actor’s homeowners association had also placed a lien on the property for unpaid dues.
Lee claims the auction didn’t give him the right home, saying the for-sale ad glossed over key details of the “luxurious, waterfront residence,” which was once touted as “Baltimore’s most extraordinary home.”
Standing on a pier jutting out into the harbor from Federal Hill, the five-story property boasts five bedrooms, seven bathrooms, an elevator, a home theater and a four-car garage.
In the filing, Lee also took issue with Asgar’s media attack, claiming the investor escalated the pressure with comments in the Baltimore Banner about Spacey’s “refusal to quit,” which sparked a media firestorm and scrutiny of Spacey’s affairs. According to Lee, Asgari even threatened to go public with Inside Edition and CBS News if he did not receive an immediate response by the departure date.
The apartment became Spacey’s primary residence after Netflix fired him from “House of Cards” over allegations of sexual assault.
Spacey, visibly emotional in a recent meeting with Piers Morgan, confessed he’s “not quite sure where I’m going to live now” and revealed he’s millions in debt, unable to pay his legal bills and running things his in custody.
Spacey left “House of Cards” and faced a lawsuit in Manhattan over allegations he made a sexual advance to a teenage girl in the 1980s — an allegation he has consistently denied. Jurors sided with Spacey in October 2022, and nine months later, a jury in London acquitted him of separate sexual assault charges. The star complained to the jury members that he had not gotten a job since the scandal broke.
